For Compassion Companions

You are not doing this alone

Being a Companion asks something of you that no one can fully prepare you for. These resources are here for the ordinary Tuesday and for the hardest night.

Additional resources

Many Companions find support outside the Commission as well. The following are offered without endorsement.

Stillpoint — guided meditation for caregivers

Ten-minute sessions designed for moments of acute stress. Available on all major platforms. Free tier available.

CompanionConnect — peer discussion forum

An independent, volunteer-run message board where Compassion Companions speak with one another anonymously. The Commission does not operate, moderate, or verify the content of this site, and does not endorse guidance offered there. Some Companions report finding it helpful. Visit CompanionConnect ›

Companion Crisis Line — available 24 hours

If you are experiencing distress, trained counselors are available at any hour. Calls are confidential and are not recorded in your Companion file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I decline the role?

The Companion designation is assigned under the Act. Families may petition for a co-Companion or, in limited circumstances, a redesignation. Speak with a counselor about your options.

Does one low assessment mean the Grace Period begins?

No. A single axis below fifty triggers a formal review — a closer look, not a countdown. The Grace Period begins only when three or more axes fall below threshold.

What happens during the ninety-day Grace Period?

The primary Companion may initiate the Compassionate Transition through the portal at a time of the family’s choosing. Counseling is available throughout. Nothing is automatic within the window.

Is the practice assessment the same as the real one?

No. The practice screening is a simplified, self-administered tool. The official assessment uses AI diagnostics, biometric monitoring, and a trained human observer in a controlled setting.

Have a question about the program? Send us a note and a Companion Services representative will follow up.

A quiet aside: there is no Commission to receive this. This message form is part of a work of fiction — the novel The In-Law Call. If you’d like to reach a real person, it’s the author you want.
